Hi! Thanks for stopping by to learn more about me, Nicole (she/her), and Nico Nutrition Inc.
Food comes first
My journey towards being a dietitian started long before I walked through the doors at the University of Alberta’s dietetics program. It started at the kitchen table. Here – where at an early age I watched my family bring in tomatoes from the garden, slow cook a sauce, and roll out fresh pasta – I learned that the satisfaction from growing, cooking, and eating food could not be underestimated. You see, I’m a dietitian now but I was – and will always be – a foodie first. Now, as an adult, the most likely place you’ll find me in my spare time is in the garden and the kitchen where I thoroughly enjoy preparing and eating delicious food with family and friends.
Becoming a dietitian
Given my love of food and science, dietetics was a perfect fit for me. After graduating with distinction at the University of Alberta’s dietetics program, I honed a diverse skillset working as a clinical dietitian in various sectors of the healthcare system. At the beginning, I serendipitously scored a coverage position in women’s health where I worked with women across the lifespan – from adolescent pregnancy to menopause and beyond. Here, I savoured my time connecting with women and developed an interest in the clinical aspects of women’s health.
As I gained more experience in other areas such as acute care and continuing care, I longed to be able to focus more on women’s health but also another budding interest – nutrition counselling. No matter the setting, I realized that my ability to counsel my clients – to help them learn something new about themselves and make a change – was my strength. This eventually led me to an emerging area of nutrition called intuitive eating. After finishing a maternity leave in the midst of the pandemic, I took an honest look at my career. Wanting to practice in a way that was authentic to my vision, core values, and interests, I realized that opening up a private practice gave me the autonomy I needed to achieve my goals. Thus Nico Nutrition Inc. was born.
